Europe's largest sociology event returns this year. The European Sociological Association Conference 2021 will take place in Barcelona, Spain. The ESA 2021 Conference dates have already been confirmed: the event will be held from August 31st to September 3rd. The organization has not yet confirmed which will be the venue of the event, and even the possibility of holding the event in various parts of the city center is being considered.
The ESA Conference has a biannual format, being held since 1992, and it comes to Barcelona for the first time in its 15th edition, being the second time that Spain hosts the event – Murcia hosted the 6th edition in 2003.
The theme chosen for this year is "Sociological Knowledges for Alternative Futures". Around this field, the different papers will deal with the challenges arisen by current society in the globalization era, such as climate change, sustainable development, violent conflicts, social inequalities, forced mass migration and health treats, within a context of COVID-19 crisis that accentuates the importance of discussing the knowledge of current society with the aim of building other, better futures.
Last year, the ESA Conference was not held due to its biannual character, so the pandemic crisis did not impact the event, although other small events and conferences of the European Sociological Association were cancelled. This year, the association is committed to holding the event and to the safety of all attendees.
The ESA Conference 2021 will have, for the first time, a fully hybrid format, blending the best of the on-site and digital worlds. That is why the technological deployment of the event will be crucial to ensure its proper development.
In addition to some of the sanitary measures such as social distance, space disinfection and mandatory use of face masks during the event, the local organizing committee is negotiating with different venues in Barcelona the possibility of getting bigger spaces, as well as open air spaces. The coronavirus situation in Barcelona is duly monitored and ESA ensures compliance with government advice.
This year's hybrid format will not affect the usual ESA Conference program of lectures and conferences. There will be three types of lectures: plenaries, semi-plenaries and midday sessions, usually hosted by two selected speakers in each session. The different formats always include debate time that invites to reflection and knowledge sharing.
In addition, the so-called ESA Research Networks will offer different sessions: the RN Sessions and the Joint Sessions. In these conferences, the most recent research will be presented from each of the sociological branches of the different networks, such as art, religion, childhood or politics.
