The best plans for Christmas in Barcelona

From the end of November, the streets of Barcelona are filled with lights and a festive atmosphere to get ready for Christmas. Markets, nativity scenes, Christmas lights and shows to celebrate the season are some of the classics in the city during these eagerly awaited days. Despite its reputation for sun and sand, Barcelona is full of fun things to do over the Christmas period, so you can have a great time with your family, your partner, or your friends - take note!

If you're the type of person who enjoys waiting for Santa like a child keep reading, because we've got the best plans for you to make the most of Christmas in Barcelona.

Visit a Christmas shop in Barcelona

There's no better place to soak up the festive spirit than Käthe Wohlfahrt's Christmas store in Barcelona. After opening in other cities in Germany, France, the UK and the US, the company opened a new shop in 2019 in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, one of the oldest parts of the city.

Here you can buy ornaments for the tree, lights, wooden pyramids, Advent calendars, nutcrackers... all of it handmade. In short, in the store you'll find any Christmas decoration you're looking for, including the Catalan caganer and other Barcelona-inspired figures.

Christmas shopping at the markets

Although they are not the most famous in the world, there are several Christmas markets in Barcelona where you can buy all kinds of decorations, sweets and, of course, gifts for the whole family.

We recommend you visit the Mercat de Santa Llúcia, the most traditional one, which is set up every year in front of Barcelona Cathedral. It is especially known for displaying all kinds of accessories and figurines of the nativity scene, caganers and the traditional caga tió, one of the typical elements of Christmas in Catalonia.

If you're in the Eixample area, there's another market in the Sagrada Familia, right in front of the church. You can take the opportunity to visit it at night and see the lights of Gaudí's impressive work in the background.

Enjoying Barcelona's Christmas lights

As in all major cities, Barcelona's Christmas lights are spread along the most important streets and squares: Calle Aragón, Gran Vía, Paseo de Gracia, Plaza Cataluña, Portal de l'Àngel....

When are the Christmas lights switched on in Barcelona?

This 2022, Barcelona's Christmas lights switch-on will be on 24 November at 18:30, just one month before Christmas Eve. The illuminations will continue until 5 January, on the Epiphany. You will be able to see the lights at the following times:

The Sant Pau Christmas Garden

If you like illuminations and are looking for an even more impressive spectacle, Barcelona will host again this year the event Els Llums de Sant Pau, an event that adorns the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site with lights and colours. This time, the concept will be the Universe of Light, offering a journey into the cosmos through LEDs. You can buy tickets here.

Taste the traditional Escudella

Food lovers can't miss out on Barcelona's favourite Christmas Day activity: indulging in the broth and giant galets of the traditional Christmas escudella, a perfect comfort dish for the coldest days of the year. You can try this meat and vegetable-based soup in several restaurants in Barcelona, such as Terra d'Escudella or l'Estevet. We recommend you contact them to find out which days they serve escudella.

After the meal, if you are in the mood for dessert there's no better plan than enjoying a hot chocolate with churros in one of the century-old granjas in the centre of Barcelona. We especially recommend Granja Viader, founded in 1870.

Attend a Christmas show in Barcelona

There are many Christmas shows in Barcelona to suit all tastes and ages. If you're travelling with children, we recommend La Fábrica de los Reyes Magos, which recreates a day in the place where Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar make all the toys, or the musical reading of Dickens' stories.

For classical music lovers, the Liceu of Barcelona, Palau de la Música and the Auditori offer traditional Christmas and New Year's Eve concerts.
